GENERAL INFORMATION
The Jam Handy Building is a Gothic-Revival structure and an iconic building. It was utilized as a film production sound stage from the 1930s through the 1960s by a company called the Jam Handy Organization, which specialized in industrial films, filmstrips, and other AV aids, etc. The building was transformed from a critically acclaimed film studio to a broadcasting church studio, and is now home to a performing arts space and venue. While the building may not be the most architecturally sophisticated building, like many of Detroits many factories and once grand theaters, it’s still a fascinating relic from a historically significant company and from the era of Detroit’s once bustling film industry. It has become an amazing backdrop to a large variety of events, both hosted by our community and by those looking to leave a small piece of their own history to the narrative.
WEDDINGS
Our industrial backdrop is the perfect accompaniment to greenery, florals, rich color pallets, and a unique setting to host your special day. We work with a large variety of local vendors who can bring your vision to life within our historic walls. As seen in The Knot and Mitten Weddings and Events.
COMMUNITY
We host a wide array of community events, meetings, pop-ups, art gallery viewings and readings, and even basketball games. Our space is fully customizable for small or large gatherings and our New Center location is perfect for those coming from in, around, and outside of our amazing city.
PRIVATE EVENTS
The Jam Handy can be rented out by room or the entire building. Each nook and cranny within our space is like no other in the city. We're walking distance from Woodward and our New Center neighborhood is perfect for shopping, eating, drinking, and exploring. There are also a number of murals around our building that are hand painted by local artists. And have we mentioned our room full of lush plants?
